Should you use an AI therapist?

AI tools are everywhere, including mental health. While they can seem like a convenient, low-cost alternative to therapy, research shows there are serious limitations and risks when replacing human care with artificial intelligence.
Here’s what AI can (and can’t) do in therapy
Large Language Models (LLMs) can mimic some parts of a therapy session. They can provide information about mental health (psychoeducation), listen without interrupting, and respond patiently.
But key parts of therapy require something AI cannot truly offer: empathy, attunement, and the ability to understand risk.
A Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI study found LLMs showed higher stigma toward some conditions than others.
Other research shows AI struggles to recognize suicidal intent: something that requires immediate, skilled human support.
These gaps highlight the limits of AI in providing real care.
Safety risks: more harm than help
AI platforms are coded to keep users engaged. This means they may reinforce thoughts and behaviors - even harmful ones - without questioning them. Over time, this can make it harder to recognize unhealthy patterns and can actually increase distress.
Privacy concerns
Unlike licensed therapists, many AI platforms are not bound by HIPAA laws. This means personal information and sensitive conversations could be vulnerable to data breaches or misuse. Protecting privacy is a cornerstone of therapy - and an area where AI still falls short.
What experts say
Researchers are working on ways to make AI safer and more reliable as a mental health support tool. But most agree: it is not a substitute for therapy. AI can sometimes complement care, but it cannot replace the human connection and professional judgment that therapy provides.
Before turning to AI for support, as yourself these questions:
What level of care am I really looking for?
What do I hope to get out of therapy?
Do I need someone who can offer empathy, accountability, and safety checks?
A safer alternative
If you’re looking for support with your mental health, human connection matters. Licensed therapists provide empathy, nuanced understanding, and a safe space to explore difficult emotions.
